David John Voigt was born in Sydney in 1944 and studied at the National Art School, Sydney from 1964 to 1968. In the final year of his 5 year Diploma in Fine Art course, he won the English Speaking Union Travelling Scholarship, and also in that year was awarded the use of a studio at the Cite International des Arts, Paris, awarded by the Power Bequest University of Sydney. David Voigt had his first solo show of etchings, serigraphs and drawings in Canberra in 1968. This was followed in 1969 by an exhibition of paintings, etchings and mix media works on paper at Blaxland Gallery Sydney, as well as in that year, an exhibition of paintings at Joseph Brown Gallery, Melbourne VIC. He was also taking part in-group shows at the Bonython Galleries Sydney before leaving for Europe.

Between 1969 and 1972 David Voigt set up a studio and exhibited in Paris, having his first solo Paris exhibition at Galerie de Haut Pave in 1970. During this period, while living in Paris, he had extensive travels throughout France, UK, Italy and Holland. In 1972 he held a major exhibition of 3D constructions, drawings and prints at Galerie Balans in Amsterdam. Also a second exhibition of drawings and prints, at the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Gallery, Amsterdam, where he lived throughout most of that year. He returned to live and work in Australia in late 1972.

Since these early years he has returned to Europe on numerous occasions to draw inspiration for new series of works, notably an extensive collection of watercolours inspired by travels in Tuscany 1987 - 88. More recently, he has traveled throughout Finland, Lapland, Norway and Switzerland, which have inspired new drawings and prints.

From 1968 until the present, David Voigt has had well over 100 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart and Perth and in many regional areas of New South Wales.
